Klara and the Wishing Spring

The stars shone high above that night.
So high that little Klara gazed at them every evening, wondering what the world looked like up there and when she would finally grow up. While other children dreamed of new toys, sweets, or exciting adventures, she wished for only one thing—to touch the stars.

She was small.
Much smaller than the other children her age. While everyone around her seemed to grow taller with each passing year, it felt as though time had simply forgotten about her.

Perhaps she didn’t even know exactly what she was searching for. She only knew that she wanted to be taller—tall enough to be closer to the stars. But no matter how brave she tried to be, the world often felt far too big, and she far too small for everything around her. And that made her sad.

The only comfort for a sadness she couldn’t quite understand came from her grandmother. She always had the perfect bedtime story—the one that would remain etched in Klara’s memory forever.

It was the story of the Wishing Spring.

Her grandmother told it over and over again, and every single time Klara listened as if she were hearing it for the very first time.

Deep in the heart of the forest, where even sunlight struggled to find its way through the thick canopy, lay a small lake. At first glance, it looked completely ordinary. But hidden beneath its surface was a magical spring with the power to grant any wish.

“But remember,” her grandmother would always say at the end of the story, “the spring never grants a wish for free.”

“What does it ask for in return?” Klara would ask.

Her grandmother would simply smile.

“No one knows. From some, it takes their most precious memory. From others, years of their life. And from some, the thing they love the most. That’s why so many search for it, but so few ever find it.”

Klara could listen to that story again and again.

And every time her grandmother spoke those final words, Klara would look up at the stars and wonder if that mysterious spring might be the one thing capable of making her dream come true.

One night, while her grandmother slept peacefully, Klara made up her mind.

She carefully packed three slices of bread, a small piece of cheese, and a little smoked bacon. She had no idea how long the journey would take or where she was supposed to go. She only knew she couldn’t keep waiting any longer.

If the spring truly existed, she would find it.

Quietly, she opened the front door and stepped into the night.

The moon lit her path, while the forest watched in silence.

Her heart pounded in her chest, but she wasn’t afraid.

She was filled with hope.

Because somewhere in the depths of that dark forest might be the answer to the question that had followed her her entire life.

And so the little girl set out in search of the Wishing Spring, never imagining that the journey would give her far more than she had ever wished for.
